Know where your main water shut-off valve is!
It is important to shut your water off quickly to avoid damage to your home in case of an emergency water leak, such as a burst pipe. Often this shut-off valve is located where the main water pipe enters the house, such as in the crawl space, garage or closet. We advise labeling it. Some homes do not have a main shut-off valve (other than at the street); we recommend having one installed if this is the case.
Each toilet and sink should have its own shut-off valve at each fixture. The shut-off valve for the toilet should be located behind the toilet on the wall. The shut-off valves for each faucet should be located under the sink in the cabinet.
If you need to shut off your main water supply quickly and you do NOT have a whole-house shut-off valve, you can call the city public works office or your local water district to have them come out to shut it off for you. Phone numbers for some public works offices are listed below.
